"The History of Western Leisure"
by Hunnicutt, Benjamin K (2006)
Abstract
Beginning with Classical Greece and Rome, via Medieval Europe, the Reformation and the Industrial Revolution, there is a rich historiography of the development of leisure in the West. Leisure has reflected, and continues to reflect, patterns of social, cultural, religious, political, economic and technological change and difference. Rival schools have developed descriptive traditions and critical/neo-Marxist approaches to historical analysis. This chapter reviews and evaluates these traditions and raises questions concerning the future development of historical studies of leisure.
