Abstract
Professor Mueller's paper represents an interesting attempt to apply the analytical tools of neoclassicaleconomic theory to an important area of social decision making. Her discussion and investigation of the determinants of participation in volunteer work shed considerable light on the question of why individuals (in this case the focus is upon women) in a market system might perform this type of unpaid labor.
