(p.216) ...the exercise of the virtues is something learned in the context of practices, as I then defined them, and that those who engage in practices need the virtues if they are to achieve the individual and common goods internal to practices. It is true that the dominant social, political, and economic institutions of modernity are inimical to the recognition of and the exercise of the virtues. But practices remain and cannot but remain central to human life and so the importance of the virtues is recurrently rediscovered.
