"Work in the era of digital platforms"
by Celentano, Denise (2025)
Abstract
Abstract This chapter provides a broad overview of the ethical and political concerns raised by work in the context of digital platforms, mapping out key questions and suggesting desirable avenues for research. The review explores five critical areas: the problem of digital meaningful work, the contested status of digital gig workers, management by algorithms in the gig economy, and the new temporal and spatial regimes enabled by Internet-based infrastructures. A central theme emerging from the discussion is the “shadowization of labor,” referring to the tendency in the digital economy to conceal the nature of labor of various forms of contribution, which calls for their appropriate recognition and valorization.
