Abstract

[La catégorie de travail ne se transpose pas aisément et immédiatement à toutes les sociétés humaines. Selon les cas, la notion nous semble absente, éclatée ou de contenu variable. Les antithèses du travail paraissent hétéroclites. Ces impressions disparaissent quand on considère les catégorisations indigènes au lieu de partir du concept de travail tel que nous le définissons. On en vient donc à s'interroger sur le statut du concept de travail : est-il la catégorie d'usage universel qu'on prétend, ou est-il une notion ethnocentrique ? Ce doute permet de renouveler l'éclairage de certaines questions, comme la pénibilité, la valorisation des activités, le rôle du travail dans le statut social. The category of work cannot easily be transposed to all other human societies. Depending on the society, this concept seems to be lacking, to be split up among many other categories, or to have variable contents. The antitheses of work are also quite varied. However our impressions change whenever, instead of starting out with the concept of work as we define it, native categories are examined. Questions thus arise about this concept's status: is it the universal category it is thought to be, or is it an ethnocentric notion? These doubts shed new light on questions such as the hardship of work, the value assigned to human activities, and work in relation to social statuses.]
