"The perils of algorithmic management for work design"
by Parent-Rocheleau, Xavier (2025)
Abstract
Abstract Algorithmic management, a system of control wherein algorithms are given the responsibility for making and executing management decisions, is one of the most disruptive forms of technological change that affects individuals’ work. This chapter provides an overview of how algorithmic management affects four key dimensions of work design: task characteristics, knowledge characteristics, social characteristics, and work demands. It reviews the recent but flourishing literature on the topic, which has so far mostly shown that automation of management functions leads to negative outcomes for workers. Following a non-deterministic view inspired by socio-technical systems, the chapter also addresses the organizational choices, policy, and regulations that together shape the quality of jobs under algorithmic management. Guidelines for future research are also presented.
