"A critical approach to AI ethics"

by Waelen, Rosalie A (2023)

Abstract

The aim of a critical theory is to diagnose society and determine how present societal issues can be overcome in order to further emancipation. We can understand AI ethics in a similar way: AI ethics is meant to identify the normative implications of AI technologies and establish how those technologies can be improved, to make sure that AI empowers rather than controls us. Given these similarities between critical theory and AI ethics, I argue for a critical approach to the analysis of AI’s ethical, social, and political implications. Such an approach requires a suitable account of power, to identify and understand AI’s ethical, social, and political impact, and an account of autonomy, to normatively evaluate and transform the identified issues in the service of emancipation.
