"Managing the called in the public sector"

by Christensen, Robert; Thompson, Jeff; Bunderson, Stuart (2018)

Abstract

Using calling scholarship we explore the practical benefits and challenges of leading public employees who view their work as a personal calling, rather than as “just a job.” How can leaders inspire the very best from public servants who view their work as calling? Using a Passion, Purpose, and Place framework to motivate our suggestions, we better equip public managers to identify employees who exhibit calling tendencies and how employees might enact a sense of calling in their work. For example, we encourage managers to facilitate a deeper connection between employees and those who benefit from their work. Public servants can also initiate their own process of purpose-identification, but managers can help by inviting employees to reflect on the path that has led them to public service. Finally, we caution that managers should attune themselves to the potential perils associated with employees who have an intense sense of calling.
