"Work and Employment in a Post-growth Era"

by Méda, Dominique (2017)

Abstract

This chapter begins with the apparent contradiction between the awareness that growth damages the environment and society and the fact that we need growth in order to sustain our social model. It goes on to show that breaking with the objective of growth may be an opportunity to recover full employment and to de-intensify work, thereby answering both ecological and social concerns. Further, it shows how it is possible to create millions of sustainable jobs thanks to the ecological conversion and to take advantage of this profound transformation to contribute to solving the problem of work intensification. The modalities and conditions of the transition towards a post-growth society are foregrounded, stressing the need for new, international social and environmental norms, a change in paradigm, a new role for the social-state.
