Abstract
In my view, the US is currently experiencing a transition from an industrial to a postindustrial economy. 1 This transition makes obsolete much of the Conventional Wisdom about how the economy works, since that wisdom was rooted in nineteenth-century industrial capitalism. Yet in the 1980s and 1990s in the US, free market economic ideas have more prestige and legitimacy than at any time since the 1920s.
