"Work and the experience of domination in contemporary neoliberalism"
by Deranty, Jean-Philippe (2011)
Abstract
1This article seeks to address the question of contemporary forms of domination in and through work, on the basis of subjective experiences of such domination. The reference material consists of work recently published in France on the psychology and sociology of work, but the theoretical aim of the article is situated outside these disciplines. The aim of the article is to extract from this rich research material arguments that will further refine the parameters for contemporary social philosophy. By this term is understood the project, now precisely defined, [1] and directly inspired by Marx, which consists in providing a critical portrayal of our epoch through the systematic and reflexive articulation of the most fruitful work in the social sciences—a project that pursues the twofold objective of a clinical description of social pathologies and a political anticipation of potentials for emancipation. The aim of the present article is to illustrate the centrality of domination in and through work for social philosophy.
